Vassar was a native of Roanoke, Virginia. He graduated from Lucky Addison High School in 1962 and enrolled at Virginia State University the same year. Vassar majored in Health and Physical Education and early in his matriculation knew that he wanted to be a commissioned officer. He completed all required courses and was a distinguish member of the National Society of Pershing Rifles. Vassar required 6 years to complete his undergraduate degree. He was commissioned in July of 1968 and attended the U.S. Army’s Airborne School and shortly afterwards reported to The Republic of Vietnam. Twenty two months after receiving his commission, he was killed in action. Vassar was inducted into the Virginia State University ROTC Hall of Fame in 1997. Those who knew him, are committed to keeping his memory alive by helping ROTC students each year.
